Southern Pacific #18 – Mini Update – November 2015

With the Thanksgiving holiday and the work schedules of both of us webmasters we are running behind on posting the goings-on from November. Since we will not be working on the engine in December, in the coming weeks we will get all the visual evidence posted from November as well as do a brief rundown of the remaining work to be done in 2016 before the engine is complete. We should have some museum building news to report as well, so check back soon.

Until then check out Ed Flemings newest short video of the restoration, and as a reminder of how far this project has come, below is a picture from December 2009 just before our first work party in April 2010.

Southern Pacific #18 Update – July 2013

Not too much happened in July on the #18. For the first time in quite some time we took a month off from work. Although we didn’t work on-site, we weren’t entirely idle. Some of the small stuff we did included: Rebuilding the final couple of brake valves; Making a new boiler check valve stem; And the cab is officially done except for the windows. It made its debut in the Independence 4th of July parade on a trailer being pulled by a 1926 Dodge!

Also, we have been diligently at work on finalizing the plans for an engine house and some trackage. We will be meeting with Inyo County officials in late August to put the finishing touches on the plans and once we have all the approvals – hopefully that’s not to far off – we will let everyone know what the plans are.

As we get into the fall and winter we will be back at it in full force with work parties in late August and September and our annual BBQ fundraiser/work party on October 26th, so come on by and see what’s going on.
