Lone Pine

Today, Lone Pine is the population center of Southern Inyo County. The town itself is roughly thee to four miles off the narrow-gauge, and was initially served by the Mt Whitney depot. When the standard gauge Jawbone branch was constructed in 1908, the SP built a depot on the outskirts of town. The railroad served the Lone Pine well into the 20th century and finally abandoned service in 1981. Phil Serpico’s book, Southern Pacific Jawbone Branch is a must read for anyone looking to learn more on this interesting part of SP history.

Think you’ve seen these rocks before? Well, you have. In Gladiator, Russell Crowe rode a horse here. The cops pursued Humphrey Bogart up Mt Whitney from here in High Sierra. Hopalong Cassidy chased everything that walked or crawled. And who knows how many others did the same.
